Joining the ranks of Sanctuary's heroes is the Crusader, a heavily armored melee class that specializes in healing and tanking. Unknown to the player, destroying the Black Soulstone causes the trapped souls inside to be released setting free Diablo and his brother once more in the world of Sanctuary. When confronting Malthael, he destroys and consumes the Black Soulstone becoming the Prime Evil once more for the player to defeat. After vanquishing legions of demons, the player must venture into the spectural world of Pandemonium to face the Angel of Death himself, Malthael. The players battle through the city to stop Malthael and his band of demons, and eventually confront the witch Adria from the preivous Diablo games. Malthael has stolen the Black Soulstone and taken it to Westmarch trying to use its dark power to help eradicate all humans from Sanctuary. Malthael, the once Archangel of Wisdom, returns as the Angel of Death.
The Story of Reaper of Souls follows up after the defeat of Diablo. In an update just prior to the release of Reaper of Souls, Paragon 2.0 and Loot 2.0, as well as two new gameplay modes: Bounties and Nephalem Rifts.
